What to expect at your first tox visit

A walkthrough of the consultation, mapping, injection, and post-visit care for first-time Botox or Dysport clients.

Your first neuromodulator appointment is shorter and quieter than most people expect. From the moment you sit down with a provider to the moment you walk out, the visit is built around three things: understanding your face at rest and in motion, planning a conservative first dose, and giving you the information you need to evaluate the result in two weeks.

The consultation

Before any product is drawn, your injector spends ten to fifteen minutes simply looking. They will ask you to make a series of expressions — raising your brows, frowning, squinting, smiling hard — and they are watching how your forehead, glabella, and crow's feet move. They are also noting asymmetries. Almost everyone has them, and a good injector calls them out before treatment so there is no confusion afterward about whether something was caused by the product.

This is also the moment to talk about your goals. "I want to look less tired" is a different brief than "I do not want to be able to make this expression at all," and both are valid. A first visit usually leans conservative — we would rather see you back at the two-week mark to add a few units than over-treat on day one.

Mapping and injection

Mapping takes longer than the injections themselves. Your provider uses a white eyeliner pencil to mark the precise points where each microdose will go. The patterns are not arbitrary; they follow the muscle anatomy that you demonstrated during the consultation. Common areas for a first visit include:

  • The glabellar complex (the "11s" between the brows)
  • The frontalis (forehead lines)
  • The orbicularis oculi (crow's feet)

The injections themselves use a very fine needle and take three to five minutes total. Most clients describe the sensation as a quick pinch or a small pressure. There is no numbing required for these areas, though a cold roller is available if you prefer it. You may see small raised welts at each injection site — these resolve within fifteen to thirty minutes.

The next 24 hours

The post-visit instructions are simple and the same regardless of which product you received:

  • Stay upright for four hours — no lying flat, no face-down massages
  • Skip the gym for the rest of the day
  • Avoid alcohol and blood thinners for 24 hours where medically possible
  • Do not rub or massage the treated areas
  • Resume your normal skincare routine the next morning

You will not see results immediately. Onset is gradual: most people notice softening at day four to seven, with the full result settled by day fourteen. That two-week mark is when we schedule your follow-up — a quick, free assessment to see how the product settled and whether any small touch-ups are warranted.

What "natural" actually looks like

The goal of a well-dosed first visit is not a frozen forehead. It is a softening of the lines that bother you while preserving enough movement to express joy, surprise, and concern. If your eyebrows still rise when you are excited and you can still furrow your brow when you are concentrating — just less dramatically — the dosing was right. If something feels off at the two-week mark, that is exactly what the follow-up is for.
